Brand is not the biggest factor in classic Google rankings, but in AI search it has become the strongest correlate of visibility, and the research now agrees on that with unusual consistency.
Because this claim moved from contrarian to consensus so quickly, it is worth separating what the data actually shows from what gets repeated about it.
For traditional rankings, brand is one heavyweight among several rather than the single dominant force. The May 2024 Content Warehouse leak exposed attributes like siteAuthority that confirm Google scores site-wide trust, and Semrush's ranking-factors research found that URL and domain traffic metrics outscore raw link counts. Both findings point in the same direction, which is that Google measures things only real brands tend to accumulate, but relevance and content quality still open the door on most queries.
Where brand genuinely becomes the biggest factor is the AI layer. Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands against millions of AI responses and found that brand-related factors correlate most strongly with visibility in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Their earlier study on AI Overviews reached the same conclusion, placing branded web mentions first, with branded anchors at 0.527 and branded search volume at 0.392, ahead of every classic link metric.
The cross-study picture is even more striking. Aggregated 2026 citation research finds that the strongest correlates of AI citation are all off-site brand signals, that ranking first yields only about a 33 percent chance of citation, and that more than 60 percent of citations come from outside the top results. In AI answers, being widely known has started to beat being highly ranked.
The reason language models behave this way is that they compress the internet's consensus. A brand that appears across reviews, forums, videos and press shows up in more training data and more retrieved passages, so it naturally surfaces as the default answer. This is also why reviews and user-generated content move AI recommendations more than on-page tweaks do, and why consistent entity signals matter so much, since every mention has to resolve to the same "you" before the signal can accumulate.
The practical answer for a store is therefore a portfolio rather than a slogan. You still need the classic gates open, because crawlable, relevant, well-linked content remains the entry ticket. On top of that, you invest in the brand ledger deliberately, by staying memorable enough to grow branded search, earning unlinked mentions through digital PR and community presence, collecting third-party reviews, and publishing under one consistent name and identity everywhere, supported by the kind of citable, evidence-backed content that gives the consensus something specific to repeat.
Measurement changes along with the strategy, so it makes sense to track branded search volume, share of voice in AI answers and mention growth alongside your rankings, because those have become the leading indicators.
The fair verdict is that brand is one of several giants in classic search and the clear giant in AI search. For a small store, that is more opportunity than threat, because brand at niche scale simply means becoming the name your category's buyers and reviewers repeat, and that is buildable in months rather than years.
