How do I optimize product titles, attributes and feeds so AI shopping agents pick my products?

Make product data clear, complete, and machine-readable—especially titles, attributes, specs, and availability. AI shopping agents need structured context to confidently match and recommend your products.

Start with a mental model shift. An AI shopping agent does not browse your store. It queries your data.

When someone asks ChatGPT for "a machine-washable merino base layer under $90", the agent resolves that request against structured attributes: fiber, care instructions, price, availability. Products that answer every clause of the sentence get shown.

Shopify Catalog does the structural work, inferring categories, extracting attributes and consolidating variants from what you provide. So the quality ceiling of your AI visibility is the quality of what you provide.

Shopify now publishes official guidance on exactly this. The Optimizing your store for AI documentation tells merchants to use clear, concise product titles, write summaries that lead with key benefits, and keep price, availability and key features prominent. It also asks for descriptive alt text, detailed specifications, comparison information against similar products, and structured attributes. Those last items are the ones most stores skip.

The companion Catalog optimization page adds two operational points. You can map which data sources feed Catalog without touching your storefront copy. And your store policies must be complete and current, because when a shopper asks an AI about returns mid-conversation, the agent answers from what is stored in Shopify.

Translated into a working method, it looks like this.

Titles should be denominative, not creative. "Merino 200 Base Layer, Men's Crew, Machine Washable" gives an agent five matchable attributes. "The Alpine Legend" gives it none.

Descriptions should carry the specifications an agent needs for follow-up questions: materials, dimensions, weight, compatibility, care, sizing guidance. Write them in functional language. Analysis of LLM extraction finds that concrete attribute statements get categorized, while subjective adjectives get filtered out as noise.

Fill the barcode field with a real GTIN, so your product can be matched and deduplicated against identical listings elsewhere. Name variant options properly: "Color: Graphite", not "Style: A". Keep inventory and pricing live, since agents drop products they cannot confirm as available.

Structured data sits under all of this, and the default is weaker than merchants assume. Analyses of Shopify themes note that standard theme output produces only minimal Product schema: title, price, availability. That is functionally invisible next to a competitor exposing full attribute sets.

The gap between minimal schema and comprehensive schema is currently one of the cheapest competitive advantages in ecommerce. Most eligible stores are already syndicated by default, so presence is universal. Data depth is the differentiator.

Two proof points that this pays. Shopify's ecosystem data shows AI-search orders growing nearly 13x year over year against 8x traffic growth, so the channel converts demand unusually well for the products that surface. And the surfacing itself is attribute-driven. Agents present comparisons, and the product with the complete row wins the table.

The insight to hold onto: this is merchandising, not copywriting. For twenty years, product pages were written to persuade a human who was already looking at them. Now they must first inform a machine deciding whether the human ever sees them.

Write for the machine's questions and the human's decision, in that order. Then check your work by asking the assistants your customers use, and reading what they say about you.
