Is programmatic SEO dead after the spam updates?

Template-swap programmatic SEO is now a named spam policy with a manual action attached, and enforcement keeps proving it. What died in the updates, and the data-driven version that survived them.

The version most people mean by programmatic SEO is dead, and Google killed it on purpose. The version that was always defensible is alive and arguably stronger, because the graveyard cleared out the competition.

The timeline explains the split. In March 2024, Google shipped three new spam policies at once: scaled content abuse, expired domain abuse, and site reputation abuse, projecting a 40 percent cut in low-quality content and later revising it to 45 percent.

The scaled content policy settled the AI argument by ignoring it: the question is not how content was made but whether it was mass-produced to rank while adding little value.

Enforcement then got specific. Analyses of the March 2026 update describe sites publishing 50 to 500 AI articles a day taking 50 to 80 percent traffic losses, and name the classic pSEO pattern directly: template pages that swap a city or product name into identical structures. Case studies from the August 2026 spam update show the same two-headed pattern, programmatic scaffolding filled with generic AI text, getting deindexed in sensitive niches.

There is also now a named manual action. "Scaled content abuse" appears in Search Console, and algorithmic suppression typically lifts only at update intervals, three to six months after genuine fixes. Recovery is slow enough that prevention is the only sane plan.

And even clean pages face a second headwind: AI Overviews now answer the exact long-tail queries pSEO was built to capture, so a thin page that survives the spam filter can still lose the click to the answer box, the same math hitting all informational content.

So what still works? Programmatic pages whose value is the data, not the template.

The pattern that survives has four properties. Each page answers with information that exists nowhere else on your site or the web: real inventory, real specs, real prices, proprietary measurements, genuine location-specific facts.

Pages below a uniqueness threshold do not ship; practitioners now set minimum-differentiation rules and pull from multiple data sources per page. Indexation is controlled, publishing hundreds of validated pages instead of hundreds of thousands of hopeful ones. And every page would justify itself to a human reviewer, because a human reviewer is now a real possibility.

The adjacent shortcut died with it. Renting subdomains or publishing programmatic sections on someone else's authoritative domain, the parasite play, ran straight into the site reputation abuse policy, and hosts now police it because the penalty lands on them.

For an ecommerce store, the legitimate versions are familiar: size and compatibility pages built from real product data, comparison pages between products you actually stock, and location pages where the local facts are true. The illegitimate version is the same template stuffed with content no one would ever cite.

The straight answer: programmatic SEO as a template trick is dead, penalized by name, with a manual action waiting. Programmatic SEO as an interface to a genuine data asset is fine, and the spam updates are the reason it finally has room to rank.
